Description of Programs Offered by MotherLand, Inc. | (A) EBI - Turning Point . (2003 - Present) | Targeted population is African American Men and Women Injection Drug Users (IDU). The intervention is based on the Health Belief and AIDS RISK Reduction Model. The first or basic part of the intervention involves an informational exercise on HIV transmission as well as group-led activities designed to foster behavior modification. In the second or enhanced part of the intervention, the participants will go through three group sessions that will rely on video/slide presentations, role playing and hands-on activities, self-assessment tests and lecture/discussion. All of these tools, including printed material, will be used to increase the participants' knowledge of drug addiction, safer sex practices and HIV/AIDS. The third component will involve testing. MotherLand, Inc. works on the assumption that members of the target population are more inclined to embrace testing if they have been exposed to information which details the consequences of their risky behavior. | | (B) Testing and Referrals . (2003 - Present) | In conjunction with the EBI - Turning Point program, MotherLand, Inc. provides voluntary on-site HIV Testing using OraSure technology. This is an oral test in which a swab is placed between the client's cheek and gum for 3 minutes. This makes it easier for those who decide to test to actually go through with that decision. | | (C ) Health Education Risk Reduction. (2002 - Present) | A city of Houston Health Department funded program utilizing Community Level Intervention (CLI). This is a curriculum-based program that offers risk reduction awareness information on HIV and STDs to youth in the juvenile probation system. | | (D) Planning Grant . (2003 - 2003) | On September 31, 2003 MotherLand, Inc. successfully completed a SAMHSA - CSAP Planning Infrastructure grant that was utilized to assess African American and Latino youth risk behaviors with respect to HIV infection and substance abuse. This planning also enabled MotherLand, Inc. to begin to structure appropriate services and activities. | | (E). HIV/AIDS Support Group Sessions. (2000 - Present) | A bi-weekly small group setting where participants obtain or share information about medication needs and resources available, especially to those recently diagnosed with HIV. | | (F). Dramatherapy Outreach. (1998 - Present) | Our "home grown" innovative approach to outreach is an integral element of the program for client recruitment, testing and community assessment. Dramatherapy outreach productions address lack of knowledge and lack of awareness of risk. Our CLI dramatic production is a peer-driven HIV prevention play that is an effective method of delivering HIV prevention information to a wide range of audiences. The content of the play heightens personal risk of HIV infection and increases general awareness and knowledge about the disease. The plays are designed to inform and educate while at the same time entertain. | | (G) Substance Abuse Support Group Sessions. (1997 - Present) | These are bi-weekly meetings that focus on the importance of being drug-free since some of the HIV positive participants are addicts or recovering addicts. |
